Senior Cat Feeding Guide: Calories, Weight and Meals
Older cats can gain or lose weight. Learn how to set calories, spot problems and plan meals for senior cats.
What changes with age
Cats age 11 and older may burn fewer calories, yet some lose muscle and need more protein. Dental pain, kidney disease and thyroid disease also change eating.
Set a starting amount
Begin with a modest factor near 1.1 times resting energy. Weigh monthly and adjust. Do not accept slow weight loss as normal aging.
Meal ideas
Smaller, more frequent wet meals are easy to chew and add water. Warm food slightly to boost smell.
When to call the vet
Call if your cat loses weight without a diet change, drinks much more, eats less for more than a day or two, or has bad breath or drooling.
